Parish House Murals
Rally Day Sunday, September 12 ,
2004 marked the dedication
of a series of murals painted throughout the Parish House by local artist, David
Holmes, to celebrate the life of Katharine Jensen. A tragic auto accident on
Interstate 94 in 2003 took the life of Katharine Jensen, a 22-year-old Park High
School graduate. The murals were commissioned by the church with money given to
Holy Communion in Katharine's memory by Marianne Jensen, Katharine's mother and
Katharine's father, Peter Jensen. "I wanted to do something that would make an
impact on the things Katharine valued," said Marianne. "And what Katharine loved
most was children." Pastor Jeff Barrow suggested having murals created in
Katharine's honor because and other church members had been impressed with
Holmes' work at Emmaus Lutheran Church.
The murals line the hallways and classrooms of the upstairs Sunday school area,
as well as the nursery. And their placement is very fitting for something
dedicated to Katharine, who enjoyed working with children, said her mother,
Marianne Jensen. A communications major at the University of Wisconsin-Parkside,
Katharine had taught Sunday school at Holy Communion and also dreamed of being a
teacher someday.
Raena Holmes, 23, the artist's daughter and Katharine's friend was also involved
in the project, painted a cutout portrait of her friend in the church's arts and
crafts room, alongside some of Raena's father's paintings. Katharine is depicted
in her Madrigal dress (she loved singing with a Madrigal group in town) with
silk flowers that once decorated her dorm room. |
